Football rivalries in Sæløerne have developed through geography, regional identity, championship competition, and the contrasting backgrounds of the country’s clubs. Before the establishment of a national championship in 1942, football was principally organized through regional associations. Local matches therefore played an important role in establishing club identities and supporter loyalties.
The creation of the national league system brought clubs from different parts of the country into regular competition. Some rivalries subsequently grew from repeated championship contests, while others emerged from shared cities, stadiums, mergers, or disagreements over club identity. Several historically important fixtures are consequently national rivalries rather than local derbies.
Among the best-known rivalries are Klassikeren between Studenterklubben Kyststed and Dansk Boldklub, De Eviges Opgør between Studenterklubben Kyststed and Sønderås BK, and Nyklassikeren between Viktoria Birkelund and FC Kyststed.
Major rivalries
Klassikeren
Clubs: Studenterklubben Kyststed and Dansk Boldklub
Klassikeren is generally regarded as the oldest major rivalry in Sæløsk football. Both clubs were founded in Kyststed By in 1904, but developed from different sections of the city’s population. Studenterklubben originated among university students, scholars, and teachers, while Dansk Boldklub was established by sailors and other local residents.
The clubs became prominent during the early development of organized football in the capital and later competed for national honors following the establishment of the Mesterrækken in 1942. Their shared age, contrasting origins and historical success have made the fixture one of the most prestigious in the country.
De Eviges Opgør
Clubs: Studenterklubben Kyststed and Sønderås BK
De Eviges Opgør, sometimes shortened to De Evige, is the rivalry between the only two clubs to have participated in every season of the Sæløsk top division since 1942.
Unlike many other prominent fixtures, the rivalry is not based on geographical proximity. Its importance instead comes from the longevity and continuity of the two clubs. Their meetings represent a link between the foundation of the national championship and the modern Ligaen.
Østerengstriden
Clubs: ØRK and ØB84
Østerengstriden is centred on the footballing identity and heritage of Østereng. ØRK was created through the combination of ØBK Østereng and Rødpil IF, while ØB84 was founded in 1984 by former ØBK supporters who opposed the combination.
The rivalry therefore concerns more than geographical proximity. It reflects competing interpretations of ØBK’s legacy, with ØRK representing the combined club and ØB84 representing supporters who sought to preserve an independent footballing identity in Østereng.
Nyklassikeren
Clubs: Viktoria Birkelund and FC Kyststed
Nyklassikeren, meaning “the New Classic”, is a modern rivalry between Viktoria Birkelund and FC Kyststed. In contrast to the older rivalry between Studenterklubben Kyststed and Dansk Boldklub, the fixture represents a newer generation of leading Sæløsk clubs.
Its importance is based primarily on the modern stature and ambitions of the two clubs rather than a shared locality. The name distinguishes the fixture from Klassikeren while recognising its growing prominence in contemporary Sæløsk football.
Local derbies
Kyststedderbyet
Clubs: Studenterklubben Kyststed and FC Kyststed
Kyststedderbyet is contested by two clubs based in Kyststed By. The fixture contrasts the university origins and long history of Studenterklubben Kyststed with the more modern identity of FC Kyststed.
Although KSK’s traditional capital rivalry remains Klassikeren against Dansk Boldklub, matches against FC Kyststed have developed their own importance as contests for sporting prominence within the capital.
Hovedstadsderbyet
Clubs: Dansk Boldklub and FC Kyststed
Hovedstadsderbyet, or “the Capital Derby”, is contested between Dansk Boldklub and FC Kyststed. The rivalry contrasts one of the capital’s oldest clubs with a considerably younger club carrying the name of the city.
Together with Klassikeren and Kyststedderbyet, the fixture forms part of the network of rivalries between Kyststed’s principal football clubs.
Birkelundderbyet
Clubs: Viktoria Birkelund and Birkelund B&I
Birkelundderbyet is the local rivalry between Viktoria Birkelund and Birkelund B&I. Both clubs represent Birkelund and share Viktoria Arena, giving their meetings a particularly local character.
The fixture contrasts Viktoria’s national profile with the community-based identity of Birkelund B&I. It is also sometimes referred to informally as Birkelundslaget.
Luffederbyet
Clubs: ØB Luffe and Færgeby GF
Luffederbyet is the principal rivalry in the Luffe region. It is contested between ØB Luffe and Færgeby GF, two clubs representing neighbouring football communities on the island.
The derby is shaped by local pride and competition for regional prominence. Meetings between the clubs have particular significance regardless of their respective positions within the national pyramid.
Fiskeroddederbyet
Clubs: Alliancen BK 1923 and Fiskerodde FF
Fiskeroddederbyet is contested by the two principal clubs from Fiskerodde. Its local character is strengthened by the clubs’ shared use of Fiskerens Net.
The fixture also contrasts the distinct identities of the clubs. Fiskerodde FF represents the town’s established football tradition, while Alliancen BK 1923 carries the heritage and supporter identity associated with Boldklubben 1923.
Historical rivalries
Slaget om Nyhavn
Clubs: Nyhavn IF and RB Nyhavn
Slaget om Nyhavn, or “the Battle of Nyhavn”, was the local rivalry between Nyhavn IF and RB Nyhavn. The clubs were separate organisations representing the same part of the capital.
The fixture ceased to be contested following the dissolution of Nyhavn IF in 1977, but remains part of the historical football identity of Nyhavn.
Færgebyderbyet
Clubs: Færgeby GF and Boldklubben af 1911
Færgebyderbyet was a local rivalry between Færgeby GF and Boldklubben af 1911. Both clubs were associated with Færgeby, making their meetings contests for local representation as well as league position.
The fixture has also been referred to as Færgeslaget, particularly when emphasising its historical and local character.
