The Lokalligaen is the fourth and lowest national level of the Sæløsk football league system. It is divided into two regional groups, Nord and Syd, each containing eight clubs.
The competition is administered by the Sæløernes Boldspil-Sammenslutning (SBS) and consists mainly of semi-professional and amateur clubs. The winner of each group is promoted directly to 3. Liga and contest the final to determine the overall Lokalligaen champion
History
The Lokalligaen was established in 2004 to provide a national fourth tier beneath 3. Liga. Its introduction expanded the league system from 30 to 46 clubs.
In 2018, the four regional groups were replaced by the present Nord and Syd divisions. Each new group contained eight clubs, reducing the number of regional sections without changing the total membership of the competition.
Competition format
Lokalligaen Nord and Lokalligaen Syd each contain eight clubs. Teams compete only against clubs in their own group.
The winner of each group is promoted directly to 3. Liga, replacing the two clubs relegated from that division. There is no promotion play-off between the group winners.
As the Lokalligaen is the lowest national division, its clubs are not relegated to another national tier. Vacancies caused by withdrawal, bankruptcy or licensing decisions may be filled by the SBS.
