Headquartered in Nyhavn, the association was admitted to FIFA in 1985 and UEFA in 1987. The SBS operates alongside six constituent regional football associations and the Ligaforeningen (LF).
History
Early regional governance
Prior to the formation of the SBS, association football in Sæløerne was decentralized and administered independently by six regional associations. Each body organized its own localized championship. While an overall island champion was declared through the annual Sælmesterskabet tournament, the absence of a central governing authority prevented the establishment of a unified league structure, leaving top-tier clubs to compete almost exclusively within their immediate geographical areas.
Foundation and centralization (1939–1957)
Rising interest in football during the late 1930s highlighted the need for a unified administrative framework. In 1939, the SBS was officially established to centralize competition rules and governance across Sæløerne.
A primary objective of the SBS was the creation of a national league system. In 1942, the association launched the Mesterrækken, which replaced the Sælmesterskabet as the premier competition for determining the national champion. The introduction of the Mesterrækken did not dissolve the six regional associations; instead, regional leagues continued operating under local governance, while the SBS assumed responsibility for coordinating national policy and linking regional play with the new top-flight division.
In 1957, the historic Sælmesterskabet title was repurposed and reintroduced as Sæløerne’s national knockout cup competition. This structural change preserved the heritage of the island’s oldest football tournament while establishing the Mesterrækken as the country’s primary league competition.
Professionalization and international recognition (1950s–present)
During the second half of the 20th century, the SBS expanded the domestic football pyramid by establishing secondary national divisions, standardizing promotion and relegation, and overseeing the transition toward professionalization.
- International affiliation: The SBS gained membership in FIFA in 1985, followed by UEFA in 1987, enabling Sæløsk national teams to enter official international qualifiers.
- Separation of commercial operations: In 1993, responsibility for the administration and commercial operation of the professional top division was transferred to the newly established Ligaforeningen (LF). The SBS retained ultimate regulatory authority over the sport, refereeing, and national cup competition.
Structure and Competitions
The SBS functions through a cooperative administrative framework comprising three distinct tiers:
- The Regional Associations (6): Administer grassroots, youth, and localized lower-tier leagues.
- The Ligaforeningen (LF): Manages the commercial, broadcasting, and administrative operations of the professional top division.
- The SBS Executive Committee: Retains supreme authority over judicial matters, national team operations, coaching certifications, and the national cup (Sælmesterskabet).
